So You Want to Be Independent?

"There is no kind of dishonesty into which otherwise good people more easily and frequently fall than that of defrauding the government."

Benjamin Franklin

US author, diplomat, inventor, physicist, politician, & printer (1706 - 1790)

Now we have some homework for you!  Yes, I said this wouldn't be easy.  It is a LOT of work!  Don't be discouraged, Rome took a while to build.  This may seem intimidating now, but when you look back in a few years and review all that you have accomplished, you will be truly amazed at what you were able to do!

Company formation is really a way for the government to collect taxes.  Let's face it, no one likes to pay taxes but that is the way a civilized society pays for things.  Same for your company, it is a formalized and legal way to establish your working relationship with your clients and your suppliers.

Remember, one step at a time.

Now for the homework.  Like any other smart business, we don't plan to re-invent the wheel.  There are loads of information at your fingertips (with help of Google) that you need to review.  No matter how much or little you want to research, remember time is of the essence.  All those proverbs about 'seize the day', 'early birds and worms' and such; they exist because they DO mean something.  You can't procrastinate; you have to act quickly, but in an informed manner.  Once you do the homework you may decide that this is way too complicated for you to handle and return to 'W2' employment.

Some of you reading this may be just trying to find anything that will pay the bills right now.  That is just fine; we all have been there, especially Free Agents!  While you are looking for that job, do the research on Free Agency as a contingency plan; just in case you can't find that job in the timeframe that you need it.

Be prepared for anything.  You may proceed along the Free Agent route, but BAM, you find a great opportunity with a good company as an employee.  Cool.  Go for it.  The nice thing about Free Agency, is that it is always there.  The more your learn about it the better prepared you will be, now or later, to make the decision to BECOME a Free Agent.

Now for the homework.  The following few links hold a plethora of information, videos and presentations on forming your own company.  Whether you choose the LLC or Sub-S type of company, the information presented is educational and will provide the basis for your future decisions.

This may seem like a lot of work and you may want to 'just do it' but please take your time to study the alternatives and understand just what you are getting into!
